Test thread for City of Sin!

It was one of those bizarre sorts of things that David still didn't understand.

Dr. Cunningham had been his tutor years ago when he'd been at Oxford, and he was now heading the Literature department at Magdalen. They were putting together a panel on Auden, and David had--in a bout of melancholy on the anniversary of Hector's death three years ago--written an essay on Auden's relationship to, and perhaps even fascination with, death, particularly in correlation to his homosexuality. He'd sent it to Scripps, who had then sent it to his editor, and before David had the chance to protest, it had been published.

The entire panel had been surreal, but David had answered questions from an audience who seemed actually to have read his essay. David almost would not have been surprised to see Irwin in the audience.

Even more shockingly, as he'd made his way from the auditorium, intending only to say a quick goodbye to Cunningham, he'd been stopped by several people who seemed to want to discuss his paper, including one young man--Christ, he was young--who had asked if David wanted to discuss it over coffee and pressed a piece of paper torn from the program into David's hand.

To say he was gobsmacked as he looked around the foyer to see if anyone else wanted to have a word would be an understatement.

"He was certainly that," he mused in agreement, stealing another half-glance back over his shoulder, then back to David. Something about him was entirely too familiar, like he'd seen him before. Or met him. Or something to that effect.

"Your panel was good, though. I daresay one of the more interesting ones I've ever witnessed, for what that's worth."

Shame, David. A little ego could do you some good.

"What, and you didn't? I read that paper of yours. Only once, mind - parts of it escape me - but I remember it raised some good points as well," Draco pointed out, tucking his hands into his pockets casually.

"And so it should. You write well. Insofar as you can string quite a few lengthy words together to form coherent and lovely sentences," he remarked, a smirk curving at his lips. For some reason, he felt quite relaxed in David's company; he felt as though theirs could be - or was, already - a comfortable rapport.

Weird, since he didn't even really know him.
alphaophiuchi: (oh really?)

"You must've missed the part where I suggested I enjoyed it," Draco pointed out, his smirk tugging a little wider. He chuckled too; this was turning out to be quite nice. "People who know how to best utilise the English language, these days, are far and few between."

He paused then, extending one hand for a shake. "Draco Malfoy."

"The pleasure's all mine, I assure you," he returned both the shake and the sentiment. The name niggled somewhere in the back of his mind, and he tipped his head slightly to one side. "I don't suppose we've crossed paths somewhere before, have we?"
alphaophiuchi: (oh hi there)

"Maybe we merely travel in the same circles," he mused. "I could believe it. Though I tend to veer towards all the raucous parties."
alphaophiuchi: (almost there)

"At the risk of sounding as desperate as the bloke who slipped you his number, are you?" The question came easily, paired with curiously arched brows.
alphaophiuchi: (a genuine grin)

Draco just offered a half-grin in response, one that suggested he felt like he had very much won. At this point, he was rather glad that most people had filed out, because someone would probably be kicking up a bit of a fuss (though probably under their breath) that he was taking up so much time.

"It could be all right, raving."
alphaophiuchi: (smirkity smirk)

"Not off the top of my head, but I do believe I know who to ask," he replied, a small smirk creeping up, unbidden. Teasing, just in case he wasn't serious, but at the same time, knowing, if he was.
alphaophiuchi: (might go with it)

Draco tsked softly, shaking his head a little. "And it's getting a bit late anyway. Most people are gone now."

He glanced over his shoulder, regarding the room thoughtfully. "Though-" And with that, he glanced back to David. "Would you be opposed to chatting again? Another time?"
